As soon as you walk through the train tunnel and step onto Main Street, U.S.A. Area in Magic Kingdom Park, you know you are in a whole new world. It’s quaint shops and restaurants have that “welcome home” feel and the streets are bustling with busy families. A few steps towards Town Square’s Municipal Park and there she is in all her magnificent glory, Cinderella Castle. I can’t describe the feeling of the sight of the castle on every visit other than saying it’s breathtaking and, at the age of 45, it still brings tears to my eyes. It’s like stepping back into my childhood.
Modeled after Walt Disney’s hometown of Marceline, Missouri, the buildings on Main Street appear larger than they actually are thanks to an optical trick known as forced perspective. The second stories of all the buildings along Main Street are shorter than the first stories, and the third stories are even shorter than the second.
Main Street, U.S.A. Area is an attraction unto itself and if you rush past to get to the attractions, you a missing a huge part of Walt’s vision of this themed area of the park. With many unique shops, fantastic dining, a working train depot and a quintessential City Hall, Main Street U.S.A. Area serves as the opening credit to the show created by Walt himself. If you pay attention to the detail found throughout, you will notice that the windows above the shops pay homage to the Disney executives, contributing artists and family members who were instrumental in making Walt’s dream a reality.
“For those of us who remember the carefree time it recreates, Main Street will bring back happy memories. For younger visitors, it is an adventure in turning back the calendar to the days of their grandfather’s youth”
– Walt Disney
