Building the Casey Jr. Circus Train

casey_jr_circus_trainShortly after Disneyland park opened its gates, Casey Jr. Circus Train “came down the track” for the first time on July 31, 1955.  Let’s take a look back at the making of a dream and building the Casey Jr. Circus Train at Disneyland park.

The Fantasyland attraction, based on the classic Disney animated film “Dumbo,” features animal cages and ornate sleighs which take guests full steam ahead on fanciful train ride.

As you can see, a simple scenery surrounded the attraction until the miniature scenes of Storybook Land were added with the opening of the Storybook Land Canal Boats in 1956.

Today, Casey Jr. Circus Train is still coming down the track and continues to delight guests (monkeys and wild animals too!).

Hop inside a festive animal cage or ornate sleigh and follow brave engine Casey Jr. on a journey through Storybook Land.  Make your way over hills and through valleys and familiar settings from classic Disney movies amazingly rendered in miniature scale.

During your train ride, be on the look-out for these famous sites:

  • Cozy straw, stick and brick houses from Three Little Pigs
  • English village from Alice in Wonderland
  • Manicured London park from Peter Pan
  • Royal city of Agrabah and Cave of Wonders from Aladdin
  • The Dwarf’s cottage from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
  • French countryside village and mountaintop castle from Cinderella
  • The Giant’s patchwork quilt from Lullaby Land
  • Toad Hall from The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad
  • Dutch windmills from The Old Mill
  • Alpine village from Pinocchio
  • Prince Eric’s palace and King Triton’s underwater castle from The Little Mermaid

Along the way, Casey Jr. faces his biggest challenge: a seemingly impossible hill. While going uphill, many think they just hear the sounds of the steam of the engine chugging uphill, but if you listen closely you’ll hear the fun hidden secret – you can hear Casey, Jr. saying, “I think I can. I think I can. I think I can.”  Do you think he can?

Thanks for sharing the beginnings of Disneyland. While my family lived in California, we went to Disneyland at least twice or four times a year.

I have an idea about Tomorrow Land’s People Mover Ride. Let the Imaginary Team ask themselves ‘What would Walt Disney do?’ Then look at some old footage of what his vision was of the ride. I hope this helps.
